Resumo: The organization was founded in 1923 in a former estate with a large old park. Now, the park are the cultural heritage objects. The distance from the city centre to the organization is 5 km.
This city is the second largest city in country and the fourth in the Baltic states. It is situated in the center of the country.

Population – 337 thousands. Ethnic Composition: 92,9% Lithuanian, 4,4% Russian, 0,5% Ukranian, 0,4% Polish, 0,3% Belarussian, 1,5% others.

The city, which was the temporary capital of country during the period 1920 -1939 (population in 2012 - ~ 320 000, in all of country ~ 3 million) is industry and cultural center of country: 8 high schools, a lot of museums, 6 theatres.

The city is always ready to offer something interesting for everyone‘s taste and interests. This city is famous for the City Jazz Festival music festival, Day of city, Bike Show Millennium festival, International Days, open-entry student's festivals – Spring festival, festival at the Student Campus and many other public events going almost every weekend.

Volunteers who do their EVS in local host organisations coordinated by Center of youth voluntary activities have all the possibilities to daily enjoy a full scale city life (cafes, pubs, cinemas, night clubs, shopping centers, parks and so on) and also volunteers' community. As mentioned, volunteers from other places of country are able to visit village on a regular basis.

EVS coordinating organisation which is in the center of the city is also a place for international volunteers (from different parts of country) to have EVS related meetings, plan common activities or simply socialize.

The coordinating organisation office is also a contact point for country young people and volunteers willing to go abroad, searching for information, volunteering projects, willing to help, interested in intercultural issues. EVS usually are accommodated in 2-3 rooms flat (about 20-30 min. away from the working place) Each volunteer will have a separate room but they will share a bathroom and toilet.
EVS volunteers are provided with monthly tickets for local transport in the city.

There are 65 (85 in a summer time) employees at the organization. There is a secondary school near by the organization. The organization has a club of friends. Members of it meets once a week. The organization cooperate with non-profit organisations like association Junior Chamber International, public body WE DO, association (minizoo) Children and Youth Ecology and Leisure Centre, nature loving children club, Academic Youth Research Society, etc.
The organization is open to various educational and community events. In 2011 here were the four environmental and arts education projects for the city primary schools. The staff gave nine lectures to students. The first in Country Children Research Laboratory was opened in 2011 in organization. Every tuesday scientists, naturalists and students interact with all ages children from city schools. Together they are performing scientific experiments, exploring the mysteries of nature.

Perfil: We would like to receive volunteers who would:
• Be passionate to explore nature and country culture.
• Preferably have knowledge of English/Russian.
• Be patient and motivated for every day work.

The Organization of VMU is open for all volunteers who are motivated to work, are flexible, communicable, able to adapt to various situations. All applicants will be considered and evaluated based on how well they suit the general profile of an EVS volunteer and the requirements of the host placement in particular. Primary selection process will be conducted by the sending organisation, later by the host organisation together with the coordinating organisation.

Age between 18 and 30 years old

Tarefas: About half of their working time volunteers will be giving help in the garden's territory doing horticultural work. Even manual work in the garden requires some special knowledge, so volunteers will have an opportunity to learn various methods of work while assisting the garden's specialists.

50% of the working time will be work with plants expositions: digging and watering plants, tree cutting, grass cutting, preparing green classes, assisting in doing the mazes from the plants.
The specialist (tutor of the volunteer) will make for volunteer the work schedule week by week. After planned week, tutor and volunteer will talk about the results.
Every tuesday administration of Botanical Garden do the meetings to talk about the work done, problems and future plans for each sector.
Organization's plant collections are presented in five sectors: Dendrology, Medicinal plants, Pomology, Floriculture and Green house. Workers of Dendrology sector are often weeding, watering and mowing their plants, pruning the trees. Workers of Medicinal plants sector usually are busy of crushing and preparation of herbal ingredients. Workers from Floriculture sector and Green house need additional help for plant watering, fertilizing, cleaning dirty pots, cleaning the leaves from the dust and pests.

Apart from the above mentioned tasks volunteers will have a possibility to work together with the university students and pupils from neighboring secondary schools:
- Organize students-volunteers meetings and joint actions together with the University student council. Promote volunteering and nature love as part of the informal learning – 20% of the working time;
- Organize working bees (collective help) and other environmental actions together with the administration of the garden, pupils (teachers) from local schools and other volunteers – 10% of the working time;
- Help to realize ideas of having sporting festivals and cultural events for kids in the garden. This idea is planned together with the garden's partners – 5% of the working time;
- Create and maintain online EVS diary on the website of the garden – 5% of the working time;
- Help to organize two events in a year at the botanical research station in the region (part of the organization;
- Participate in fairs organized by the garden, create the souvenirs, promote the garden in the context of EVS (5% of the working time).

Volunteer activities in our Botanical garden can be divided according the seasons:
October (as an example): adaptive period, introduction to botanical garden's life and staff, formation of the tasks according to the opportunities and expectations;
November - March period: work in Green house, assistance in organizing events, language courses, meetings and work with communities, work on webpage and public relations, visits to schools;
April - May period: work with plants expositions, learning of collections management, planting tree, cutting branches, helping in the preparation to the fair, work in the visitors centre;
June – August period: work in Medicinal plants sector, digging tulips, cleaning tulips bulbs, work outside in the park, monitoring, meetings with local people, tourists;
September: work on visibility of the project, collecting photo material, preparation for project evaluation, evaluation meeting;
Time for volunteers initiatives, dissemination of ideas, possibilities to visit other country botanical gardens, national or regional parks will be discussed and foreseen together with volunteer, host and coordinating organisations.
Volunteer will be free to initiate other actions of environmental protection together with friends, local pupils/students or other EVS volunteers. We hope that the volunteers will be full of creative energy and will help to make the garden even more attractive and efficient. At the end of the service the volunteers will be asked to write opinions in their language about their work for the garden's internet website. All the tasks are planned to encourage volunteers' communication with the local community, their will to learn and work in diverse social environments.
