Resumo: During the last century the city developed into a centre for heavy industry. Unfortunately, many of the factories had to close due to the economic changes resulting from the reunification of Germany. Like other cities in Germany, the city has a high unemployment rate, which causes social tension and problems which are particularly widespread in those parts of the city that were built in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Over the last few years the number of students attending university in the city has steadily increased. The city also has a rich and varied cultural life; theatre and cabaret offer an interesting and ever-changing repertoire, and there are a lot of museums and galleries, as well as various cultural activities to be visited.

Perfil: We are looking for a volunteer with good teamwork skills and who is creative, flexible and responsible. Openness in dealing with groups and enthusiasm for interaction with people are likewise important. Many of the organisation’s activities take place when children and young people have free time; therefore it is also important to be willing to work evenings and weekends.
Experience in youth work and an interest in the areas of computers, media and sport as well as organisational skills are an advantage, but are not essential.
We would wish the future Sending Organisation to be active in the field of local youth work. In this case we would be interested in cooperating in other projects through the work of the volunteer. This cooperation could perhaps be developed with the support of the volunteer during or after his / her period as a volunteer.

Interested young people can contact us directly or through our partners. During the selection process the motivation, expectations and wishes of the volunteer in relation to our project will be examined. Together we will check whether the young person’s wishes and interests are compatible with the objectives and practical reality of our EVS project and whether or not we can develop a task profile together.
Young people with previous experience in common international youth projects in our partner cities will be favoured during the application process.
Age: 17-30

Tarefas: The youth facility is conceptually orientated towards public work with children and young people, particularly those from a disadvantaged background. This includes integration assistance for migrants and Germans from socially weak families. The work offers the visitors meaningful and supported leisure activities. In addition, various projects also provide basic educational opportunities; a media project, a creative project, separate projects for boys and familys and an “Open-Door Area” are offered.

The opening hours are as follows:
Monday: Project day
Tuesday to Thursday: 14:00 - 20:00
Friday and Saturday: 14:00 - 22:00
The volunteer will work for five days at a time, alternating according to the following schedule: during the first week he / she will work from Monday to Friday, and during the second week from Tuesday to Saturday.
The media project offers children and young people the chance to learn how to use the PC and new media (internet) responsibly. Basic instruction in using common programmes such as Word and Excel is provided. In addition, the participants make a weekly contribution to the forum in which they describe the institution’s activities; in doing so, they learn about digital photography, photo editing, graphics and layout, and can also put this knowledge into practice. In addition, the media project provides an opportunity to write applications, to use the internet effectively and to work on school projects.

The volunteer's tasks are:
Organising and carrying out computer courses for different levels
Designing a communal website with and for young people
Designing publications with and for young people
Courses in photography and video, designing the club newspaper, etc.
The Open-Door Area is the “entrance” to the facility. Numerous activities, such as billiards, darts, table football and board games, are available to the visitors here. In addition, sporting activities also take place, e.g. weekly indoor football and volleyball training, training in the fitness centre and lessons in climbing and knot-tying on the internal climbing wall. Internal tournaments or tournaments with other institutions or street teams are regularly organised or taken part in. The volunteer's tasks are:
Developing and carrying out sporting and outdoor activities together with the young people
Language courses in English and in the language of the country as well as intercultual activities. A colleague from an immigrant background works in this project, seeking out young immigrants at their meeting-spots and doing social-paedagogical work by building up a relationship with them. It is also possible for the volunteer to work in this area, particularly in the experiential-paedagogical activities.
