Resumo: Founded in 1873 the organization is a local voluntary organisation that works with children, young people, families and community, with particular regard to those that are disadvantaged and disaffected. Underpinned by Christian principles, the organization responds to local needs and seeks to share and learn from being part of a national and international Movement. Affiliated to the National Council of Ireland, the organization is an autonomous organisation governed by a local voluntary board of directors.

With a population of approximately 40,000, the city is located on the northern shore
of Belfast Lough, stretching from Greenisland in the southwest to Whitehead in the east. The borough is approximately 10 miles from Belfast.
Local social and economic statistics, available through NISRA, identify that ‘Education, Skills and Training is the domain in performs worst, with 6 of the borough’s wards falling into the top 20% of most deprived in Northern Ireland. Five wards also fall into the top 20% of most deprived in relation to Living Environment, while a number of wards also exhibit Income, Employment, Health & Disability and Crime & Disorder deprivation.
Approximately 24% of the population are under 16, representing just over 9000 young people.

Perfil: For this project there are no specific qualifications required from volunteers (either academic or vocational). However there is a requirement for volunteers to demonstrate some personal attributes. These include: commitment to working with children, young people and adults from a wide variety of socio-economic groupings; openness to different cultures within Northern Ireland; willingness to share own culture; enthusiasm for working with young people; knowledge of youth issues; willingness to learn and an enjoyment in working with children is crucial, since we wish the children to be in a positive environment.

Tarefas: The placements will provide an enormous opportunity for personal development for the volunteers – giving them the challenge of living in another culture and language, to live without the security of a familiar people, place, language, culture and food. They will have the opportunity to learn more about their own strengths and weaknesses and about what aspects of life are the most important to them. Living with volunteers from other countries and working with local staff/volunteers and communities will provide a superb opportunity for the development of social and communication skills. Training provided will help to develop the skills of the volunteers and allow them to undertake new activities, which will help their confidence to grow. Specific competence will be developed in the following areas:
Learning to Learn: Monitoring and evaluation will take place throughout the placement, thus helping the volunteers to identify their own learning. Meetings will be held with the project supervisors and mentor and this will help to monitor and evaluate the volunteers’ work and learning. Following a model designed by Bryson House (the NI EVS Training organisation), there will also be self-evaluation since, after completing their induction period, all volunteers are asked to write a monthly report for their mentor. The volunteers will take part in a group mid-term evaluation session with other EVS volunteers and will complete the final evaluation forms. The volunteers and their mentor will work together to complete the Youthpass documents at the end of the placements.
Interpersonal and Social Competences/Communication in Foreign Tongue: through working alongside local staff/volunteers and through involvement with the local community, the volunteers will have the opportunity to further develop interpersonal and social skills. Through their engagement with organization programmes volunteers will meet with people from all kinds of different backgrounds and learn how to deal with conflicts in a constructive way. They will have the opportunity to develop their English through everyday communication.
